Village Socerb with the old castle (Grad Socerb or also known as Grad Strmec) has an incredible view over the Koper and Trieste (all the way to Miramare castle!) and is definitely one of the coolest viewpoints in Istria. Or even in Slovenia.
The Castle (Grad Socerb)
As I saw at the doors, the castle is currently a restaurant with a bit strange working hours but visiting a restaurant is an only option to see the castle from the inside. The castle is not so spectacular itself; the view is something worth driving for. Even when this means that you have to take a little detour. The Castle was an important stronghold in the Illyrian times and a fortress in the Roman period.
How to get there?
From Italy/Koper: Take the motorway from Koper to Črni Kal/Ljubljana. Take a right exit when you see the Črni Kal/Socerb sign. Turn right for Socerb and follow the signs. Turn left to Črni Kal.
From Ljubljana: Take the motorway from Ljubljana to Črni Kal/Ljubljana. Take a right exit when you see the Črni Kal/Socerb sign. Turn right to Socerb and follow the signs. Turn left to Črni Kal.
Trip idea – Socerb, Napoleon’s road and Miramare
In one day you can easily combine the visit to the castle with a walk through Napoleon’s road. Above the Trieste city lay a small village, Villa Opicina and next to the obelisk you will find the starting point of the Strada Napoleonica road. It ends in Prosecco and the walk will offer you a stunning view of the Trieste, Adriatic Sea and even the Miramare castle. You can visit it too in the same day, but I would suggest that you don’t try to combine everything with the Trieste visit.
