Smoothies are an easy way to get five or more servings of fruits and vegetables every day. When deciding about ingredients in your green smoothie you should think about the green part (kale, spinach, parsley), the sweet part (banana, strawberry, mango, pineapple, what fruit you like the most), some superfoods if you like them (matcha, maca, chia seeds, protein powders, flax seed, oatmeal) and the base (almond drink, water, milk, yogurt). You may pick and choose the ingredients to develop your own favorite variation.
Why use spinach?
This one is with spinach which is a great green to use for beginner green smoothies for a couple reasons. It is easy on your blender because of its naturally very delicate texture and flavor. And the second reason – it tastes great! The slightly sweet and subtle flavor of spinach goes really well with fruits and especially with protein powders.
Spinach is also loaded with nutrients like iron, calcium, vitamin K, vitamin A, vitamin C, fiber and much more. Don’t be afraid of the greens! I assure you that smoothie will taste delicious if you choose a good base and lots of fruits to »cover« the green taste.
You may pick and choose the ingredients to develop your own favorite variation. My favorite green smoothie (as simple as it gets) is stated below.
- 1-2 cups raw spinach
- 1 cup (frozen) banana (or 1 whole fresh one)
- ½ cup coconut water
- 1 tablespoon matcha, optional
- 1 scoop of vanilla/white choc protein powder (I am using Myprotein one – check link if you want a 25 % discount), optional
Simply combine all the ingredients in a blender until thick and creamy. You may adjust for your desired thickness by adding ice or removing/adding liquid. Your green smoothie is ready!
